Cat and Small Animal Care
We are busy every day from 8:30-11:30am cleaning, feeding and caring for pets at the shelter in order to be ready for our 12:00m open time. We always need daily scheduled volunteers to assist cleaning and socializing with the cats and small animals in our care.
Dog Enrichment Team
Volunteers on this team work with shelter dogs to increase their adoptability through training and behavior modification. Only positive reinforcement training methods are used. Dog workers are required to complete a training course with Helen Nichols of No Monkey Business Dog Training at the shelter after completing a Pope Memorial SPCA orientation.
As a volunteer you can help our guest relations by welcoming visitors into the shelter, directing them as needed and answering basic questions. Volunteers will also be answering the phones at the shelter, and directing calls as needed. Guest Relation volunteers must commit to at least one day per week, be very outgoing, have excellent customer service skills and able to engage in communication with the public. Other tasks may be requested to assist staff.
Fundraising and Special Events
We encourage volunteers with past fundraising or other relevant events experience to get involved with our special events. Volunteers who participate in fundraising and special events should be customer service oriented and familiar with how the Pope Memorial SPCA of Concord Merrimack County functions as well as the scope of services we provide.
We are always looking for volunteers with great computer, phone, and organizing skills to assist us with the administrative aspects of the shelter. Duties would include copying, data entry, and other administrative tasks as needed.
Volunteers enrich the lives of so many who are denied daily life with a pet, through either hospitalization or through housing restrictions. Our pet therapy teams visit hospitals, nursing homes, and retirement centers and take the joy and healing effects of pet companionship to people through Merrimack County. These visits are done during weekdays.
Foster homes make it possible for the Pope Memorial SPCA of Concord Merrimack County to socialize and re-home many more animals than would be possible otherwise. Our foster homes literally save lives.
Foster homes are called upon most often to foster pregnant cats, cats with nursing kittens, orphaned kittens, and kittens that are weaned but still too young to be placed for adoption.
Dogs requiring temporary medical care, whether daily medications or to recover from surgery, are often placed in foster homes. Foster homes are occasionally required to open space in the shelter for yet more misplaced animals.

Offsite Adoption Kennel Assistant
We host three offsite adoption locations at Petco, 35 Fort Eddy Rd, Concord, PetSmart, 299 Loudon Rd, Concord and Petco, 190 Quality Drive, Hooksett. At these locations we house adoptable cats. We ask volunteer kennel assistants to arrive at the stores during the hours of 7-9 am to clean and care for the cats on site. You must have reliable transportation, be very dependable and have the ability to work independently.
Reading Tails Program
The mission of Reading Tails is to assist children with literacy skills. Children are given the opportunity to share a book with a registered pet therapy dog and their owner. The concept of a child reading to a canine friend incorporates a child’s love of animals and his or her desire to read. A pet therapy dog is one that willingly sits or lies quietly by the child that is reading. Owners and their dogs donate their time, offering a child a willing audience.
